HemingwayEx

Ever since I first installed the Hemingway theme on my wordpress blog, I have been a big fan of it. I love tinkering with it and every now and then I keep adding something new or changing something here or there in the theme. I have finally decided to make my modifications available to others for download as well.

So, I introduce HemingwayEx, a simple extension of Hemingway theme for WordPress blogs. I have tried to keep the original essence of the Hemingway theme and added some new features and fixed some small issues. This theme comes with an options page and is widgetized.

HemingwayEx 1.9.1 has been tested with WP 3.1.4.

Features

Here are some of the main features of HemingwayEx:

Widgetized: This theme is best used with Widgets. Out-of-box, it works only with widgets. This version removes the support for Hemingway Blocks. To have the option of using Hemingway Blocks instead of widgets, please stick with v1.1. By setting an option in v1.1, you can select whether you want to use the original blocks system of Hemingway themes or use widget enabled sidebars.
WP 3.0 Menus: Out-of-box support for WP 3.0 Menus. Also, has a fallback mechanism in case you haven’t defined any menus or you aren’t using WP 3.0 yet.
Options Page: You can go to Presentation -> HemingwayEx Options and set various options that give you more control over how the theme works for you.
Font Size: I have had some people complain about the small size of the theme. Though I like it and I have kept it same, I have provided a simple javascript tool that can be used to increase/decrease the font size of the theme. It is located just below the search form.
User Styles: The theme allows user to easily modify the theme’s CSS to their liking. It also comes packaged with a few CSS themes.
Comments: IMHO, comments are handled in a very nice manner. I love the comment numbering and you can have them displayed in ascending / descending order. Also, support has been added for WordPress Gravatar API.
Updates Notification: You will get automatic update notification in HemingwayEx Options page when a new update is out.
Dynamic Slidebar: Just like the Hemingway Bottombar, I have added a HemingwayEx Slidebar that gets displayed when the user clicks on an ‘Open Navigation’ button.
XHTML validated
Post and Page Navigation: The single post pages display links to previous/next posts. Similarly, the homepage can be paginated.
Out-of-box support for some plugins

Testing
I have tested the latest version of this theme with WordPress 3.1.4. I used Firefox (version 2x, 3x on Ubuntu/Windows/Mac OS X), IE (5/6/7 on Windows), Safari (Mac OS X) and Opera (Windows). It seems to be working fine.

Download HemingwayEx v1.9.1.

Installation

Installation is very simple. Just download the zip file and upload the ‘hemingwayEx’ folder to themes folder in your WordPress installation. Goto the Admin Menu -> Presentation -> Themes and select the theme.

Once installed, you can go into Presentation -> HemingwayEx Options and customize the theme further to your liking.

Upgrading

If you are upgrading, you will need to reset/uninstall the previous version of HemingwayEx first. If you don‚Äôt you might find the display mixed up. Here are the steps you should follow:

Goto HemingwayEx Options page and note down you settings.
Now upload the new files for HemingwayEx theme.
Click reset button at the bottom of the HemingwayEx options page.
Refresh the HemingwayEx Options page and set the options to what they were before. Also, set more options if new settings have been made available.

Disclaimer

Please note that even after spending quite some time on this theme, I have little experience with PHP. I mostly play around with it and learn as I code. I have been using this theme on my site for sometime now and I have not had any problems, but if some issue does come up, please don’t hold me responsible. I would like to know about the bugs that could be fixed and some other features that could be added, and I would work on it, time permitting.

There were a couple of bugs that I came to know about 30 mins back. I have fixed them.

One bug wasn’t displaying the About Entry section properly in IE and the other was overwriting data that it shouldn’t have.

If you downloaded the zip, you can get the new files and update style.css, single.php and functions.php.

Awesome update, Nalin!

The only bug I’ve run into thus far is if you change the excerpt length to anything other than 75, the widgets don’t work. The only way to get them back is to do a reset/uninstall.

In IE6, when you click on open navigation, nothing shows up, however if you change the font size while it is opened everything will then appear.

Many Thanks to your HemingwayEx. I love it very much.I’m a chinese student and studying CSS.
The Original CSS setting is beautiful. But cannot use in the other code ,simply like: traditional or simplified chinese.
My MAMA and my boyfriend hate the text in the blog was shown very much. This make me unhappy. But I didn’t know how to change the text form on the CSS.
BTW: There is one problem when using Safari to view the website. The comments form and the “Add comment” button is superposed.

I just wanted to say thank you for making this theme. The original Hemingway was nice to start but didn’t give you much room to expand it. This version you have created has just about everything I wanted in this theme. Thank you once again, now maybe I can finish building my site, rather than trying to rig a theme.

Hey Nalin,

If you want the top navigation bar to show up correctly in IE, then you can add the following to the CSS file:

#navigation ul li a {
float:left;
}

Currently, the highlighted item just displays as black & white in IE. This is because the transparency doesn’t have any affect unless you apply some positioning CSS to the element.

If anyone else is interested, I also made a post on how you can get the paging links to work on your homepage (located here).

Thanks a lot Nalin for this update, this makes HemingwayEx just the perfect theme I wanted ! I was looking for a few month for different versions of Hemingway working nicely with widgets, seems like you did the best around here

I’m modifying it a bit now, trying to get a not-so-black theme, near the Hemingway4U look (but not green…). I’ve themed EventCalendar and Now Reading to match the current HemingwayEx colors, if somebody is interested.

I love this theme! I do have a question: when I click ‘Open Navigation’, the underlying navigation menu at the top appears only briefly, then vanishes and I’m left looking at a black space. Any ideas of why this is happening?

Hmmm…..hope a solution comes along soon…..it really is an awesome design!

Other question: when in WordPress editor, I’m unable to see the Bottom Right Sidebar box where I can drag a widget. I tried changing the screen resolution which allowed me to get to the Bottom Middle box, but still can’t get over the Bottom Right. Any suggestions?

Great theme! Question, with widgets enabled I can only drop widgets into the slidebar 1-3, and after many attempts I was able to drop widgets into #4 bottom, but I can’t drop them into 5 and 6, which leaves that default text that reads “you shouldn’t be seeing this”. Any suggestions?

I keep thinking I should change my site design (have been using HemingwayEx for months now!) because, well… one is supposed to… but everytime I search for some new theme, there’s always something missing (HemingwayEx is my gold standard) and I end up realising (again) how much HemingwayEx has to offer!

If anyone wants to use jQuery instead of script.aculo.us for the top slidebar, then you can replace the contents of slide.js with the following:

(I’m using jQuery’s noConflict option here just to make sure there’s no conflict if you are still using prototype for anything)

My comments are showing up in every single one of the posts and pages, not just on the post they were left on. It is theme specific to HemingwayEx. Any ideas? Tried to follow the code to see what was happening, but can’t find it.

Nalin, I found another HemingwayEX bug regarding Google Webmaster Tools. If you submit your website to Google and track it through Webmaster tools, you will get 404 for every single page you have on your website. Thing causing this is Text Size tool (just under the search bar), which points to index.php which doesnt exist for every single post. I managed to fix this by manually changing the link (in theme’s header.php) to # instead of index.php, but it would be nice if this issue is fixed for next ver. of HemingwayEX….

Greta work. I justtrie dto use the Thickbox plugin with HemingwayEX (1.0) and it works great, EXCEPT…that Thickbox breaks the navigation slider feature. Is it a Scriptalicious conflict maybe?

I recently upgraded from .95 beta to 1.0 – now the Navigation slider/pane won’t work. I followed the instructions above w/ the reset, but the navigation panel stopped working in both IE and Firefox. I removed 1.0 and tried to reload .95 and the same issue exists. I’m bummed because I love this theme!!! I hope there’s a fix for my issue.

@Satish: Yes, you can make your own custom blocks. Nalin has included enough ‘sample’ default blocks in /wp-content/themes/hemingwayEx/blocks/ for you to build up your own custom block. I’ve used it for WP-Polls by Lesterchan.

There’s a significant difference in the way these themes appear between Internet Explorer, Safari and Firefox (mac).

Basically it looks much better in Safari and Firefox.

It has to do with the tabbed navigation shading at the top. I’ve attached a pic in the forums to illustrate.

Hey mate, Love you template!!

You know how your template is TWO TONED, you have the upper bit where all the texts sits and the bottom where the widget sits.

My Question is for the template where all the TEXT sits, which is the top, what is the HEX Colour code for the top part of ur theme? the background i mean for the top colour? trying to put adsense and having problems finding out what hex code is your theme colour.

@Arvin: I am running the latest WordPress (2.3.3?) and aside from the fact the template needs few tweaks (e.g. the tags page/code) and such, I think it works fine. I did start using HemingwayEx from the 0.96 version though, so am not sure if 1.0 has changed that significantly.

Hi Nalin, man i’ve installed your theme and is awesome, simple and crystal clear … i love it ! but i have a big problem, i’ve tested on your site and seem here is work just great but on mine has a bug. I’m talking about Navigation Pane, when i click “Open Navigation” and i hold the mouse on place or is not passing above navigation zone that is not visible, if i move mouse over the zone everything is back. Any ideea ?

How do I manage the page or assign a new page to the HOME menu item which was generated by the H-Ex theme?
HOME does not show as a parent page in the dropdown when creating a new Page, nor does it show on Pages in Manage. If I create a new Parent Page named HOME it is just added as a another item to the top menu.
Sorry, I have just started experimenting with WP…

I’ve noticed that IE7 doesn’t like it when you use HemingwayEXin conjunction with Twitter Tools. The issue is that the sliding action for the Navigation will no longer work correctly, throwing a Javascript error for the openSlidebar or closeSlidebar functions.

Researching this a little further I found that Twitter tools relies on “/wp-includes/js/prototype.js?ver=1.6″ which it inserts in the through the wp_head(); hook. There are probably other Plugins that rely on this same file.

Is there a particular reason for this theme not to use the prototype file provided by WordPress? If not then would it be possible to amend the template so this file is called instead?

First of all thanks a lot for this cool theme! It seems version 1.1 doesn’t work on WP 2.6? When I tried it, the bottom sidebar area did not appear at all, neither did the “Open Navigation” tab on top. On the other hand, hemingwayex-095-beta doesn’t have this problem on 2.6.

I am using HemingwayEx 1.0
Your theme is just wonderful. But I am facing an issue. Comments are not coming in full on the pages if the number of lines are more than 3. It is simply dropping the content after 3 lines.

My installation is very stable, and I have tweaked something according to my needs. I do not want to re install the package. Can you please guide me, how to fix this particular issue?

Hi, I’ve identified a small bug in the Search Results page (search.php). Whenever one searches the results should return a very nice line saying:
“You searched for [search.terms] at [bloginfo.name].”
What happens however is that the name of the blog gets put all the way in the front so you end up with:
“[bloginfo.name]You searched for [search.terms] at .”

It looks like line 39 in search.php needs some amending.

Well there were some minor issue if you can incorporate them

1. XHTML validation : The related post plugin renders the Single post template invalid XHTML as the bar on left hand uses tags and related posts creates

I have used the following piece of code inside the single.php to fix this

2. I had issues with pagination where i could not get all my posts. The issue is that i use 10 post in WordPress Reading Options and where as the theme only displays 2 posts and rest of the entries are skipped and when we move to next page we get the 11th and 12th post instead of 3rd and 4th.

So if there are instruction somewhere i could have saved some time and may be save time for lot of other people. Also can you set this from your theme options page?

Very nice looking Theme.

But…

There is no information regarding the compatibility with the latest wordpress version ( now at this moment wp 2.8.2)

It would be nice if this theme is in constant development.

The final release (hemingwayex1.5) really says that it will never be any update from now and wordpress just announce that it already stopped support for wp2.x branch.

@Rick/@yokser: Did you try going to HemingwayEx’s options and selecting the white CSS? It’s there. You can look at HemingwayEx theme’s style folder. There is also a blue/black theme.

Hey, thanks for this awesome update of Hemingway! I love what you’ve done with it.

One addition for folks out there who want to design a different static home page. I needed a way to edit the page.php that didn’t change the design of all of the pages. I have some photos I want to have cycle using wp_cycle on the main page but not the others. I solved this in the original Hemingway by adding a php file called homepage.php and altering the page content as needed. I know others have done this elsewhere but it has such a clean look I know quite a few people prefer to put photos on the main page. Cheers.

I would like to use the latest HemingwayEx white template, but unfortunately the menu still causes problems when using IE 6.

I’ve already tried both the 1.7 and 1.8 versions of the template, on WP 3.0 and 3.0.3 and the result is still ‘a black bar under the shaded gray navigation menu’. FF, Opera, Chrome and Safari all work well.

Surprisingly, there are websites (e.g. http://robin.babylone.free.fr/ or http://nalinmakar.com/hemingwayex_demo/), where the template works properly. Nevertheless, in the case of the site which I’m currently working on (http://paulsmeets.eu/), as well as for http://www.nalinmakar.com/hemingwayex/ it just won’t work.

I would appreciate any guidance with fixing the bug.

Does the theme clash with mootools-based plugins? I was using Lightbox M for picture/video overlays and it no longer works. The links that should pop out the overlay window now simply jumps to the linked picture/video. I switch back to the default TwentyTen and several other themes (include the old Hemingway), and they all worked with the plugin.

I think I found the problem. It was the standard mootools/prototype clash. If I remove prototype from the theme, then my mootools-based plugin works; but the slidebar, which is obviously prototype-based, wouldn’t work. And I think a previous poster already mention how to go with jquery instead to avoid using prototype.

Dear Nalin… so… in index.php we only translated English phrases into Italian (Categories>Categorie etc.) and created our css without changing style.css… paging is enabled… excerpt instead of post, ok… we really don’t understand why all posts are shown in home page! Any ideas?

@Nalin: PROBLEM SOLVED! The problem was that the last 80 post were “always on top” and this caused a mess!
BUT: sometimes a post deserves to be always – or longer than the other ones – on top; unfortunately even a single post on top screws up the layout…
And… if we wanted to show 4 or 6 posts, they would be displayed in a single column under the first post…
Such things maybe could be… corrected?
Any way, it’s only a suggestion… thank you very much for your WONDERFUL work!

You need to edit single.php in hemingwayex theme folder. Just remove the whole section. This might mean changing some css stuff too because the post section would become wider.

Hi!

Found the theme today, looks really great!

One thing I would like to do is to get rid of all the white space in a longer post. The theme looks really great with double-columns and in short posts. But if it’s a long one it would be really nice if most of the width of the page could be used to display the actual post. Any ideas how to accomplish this? (Re)moving the “About this entry” seems like a start, but how to adjust the space available to the post? I suppose this needs to be done in the CSS somewhere?
